Congratulations from the United Nations and NATO on the occasion of the centenary of the Lithuanian Diplomatic Service

The Lithuanian Diplomatic Service marks its 100th anniversary on 7 November 2018. In their congratulatory messages, the leaders of the United Nations and NATO underline the contribution of Lithuanian diplomacy into international organisations and the significance of diplomatic activities while aspiring to independence during the soviet occupation.

Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, emphasised Lithuania’s efforts to preserve global peace and its active engagement during its non-permanent membership of the Security Council in 2014 and 2015 particularly in attention to the protection of civilians in conflict situations, the prevention of illicit arms transfers, and the advancement of the rule of law.

“The United Nations benefits greatly from the proactive, diplomatic engagement of Lithuania in these and other fields,” the UN Secretary-General’s message runs.

Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Rose Gottemoeller, in her video message, says Lithuanian diplomats can be very proud of what they have achieved by their steadfast diplomacy culminating in Lithuania’s membership of the European Union and NATO.

“You are the only state institution that continued to function over the decades of soviet occupation. Your resilience is exemplary, indeed inspiring,” Rose Gottemoeller notes and encourages to continue working together to defend democracy, freedom, rule of law, and sovereignty and independence of the allies.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was established on 7 November 1918 when Augustinas Voldemaras assumed the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania. The Lithuanian diplomatic service has been functioning uninterruptedly for a hundred years since 1918.
