Minister L. Linkevičius meets with Chairs of key Committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives
On 7 February, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius together with Ministers of other Baltic states visited the United States Senate and House of Representatives.
The three Baltic Ministers met with the Chairman of the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations Jim Risch and Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations Robert Menendez. The Senators were briefed about the security issues of the Baltic region. The meeting also discussed transatlantic cooperation. The Senators were thanked for taking a strong position on response to Russia, sanctions against the country, and support for Ukraine.
“It is important to keep the pressure on Russia for its actions against Ukraine and security in the entire transatlantic area. A relaxation of the sanctions would be interpreted as invitation to continue aggressive acts,” said L. Linkevičius.
L. Linkevičius also met with the Senator Martin Heinrich, who is Member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Select Committee on Intelligence, and the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee. In the meeting, the Foreign Minister emphasized energy security ties with the U.S., including the strengthening of the Partnership for Transatlantic Energy Cooperation (P-TEC), and reminded about the construction of the unsafe Ostrovets nuclear power plant in Belarus.
With the Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Co-chairman of the House Baltic Caucus Adam Schiff, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister discussed the support of the Caucus for the three Baltic states’ efforts to strengthen transatlantic cooperation, and the American military presence in the region. The Foreign Minister acquainted him with Lithuania’s efforts to counter hybrid and cyber threats and promote people-to-people contacts with Russia’s civil society.
The Lithuanian Foreign Minister also discussed security in the Baltic region and the fight against Russia’s malicious acts with the President and CEO of the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) Peter B. Doran, the Senior Fellow and Director of Russia Program Brian Whitmore. In addition, L. Linkevičius spoke on the PowerVertical webcast (Podcast).
