Presidents of Lithuania and Poland discussed coordinated response to the pandemic, security and defense issues

President Gitanas Nausėda met with President of Poland Andrzej Duda who came for a working visit to Lithuania.

During the meeting the Presidents established the Council of Presidents to strengthen cooperation at bilateral, NATO and EU levels, and ensure the transatlantic partnership and security. The Council’s agenda will focus on maintaining security and stability and strengthening democracy in the Eastern Partnership countries. “The Council marks a qualitatively new stage in our cooperation. I am convinced that this format will strengthen political, economic, institutional and cultural cooperation”, the President said.

Security and defense issues were an important topic of the meeting too. It was agreed that strong transatlantic link and relations with the US were the foundation of our region’s security. The two Presidents highlighted that further strengthening cooperation by improving military mobility infrastructure, combating hybrid and cyber threats as well as disinformation was necessary. The President expressed gratitude to Poland for its contribution to the Baltic security – Polish troops already took eight rotations in the Baltic air policing mission.

During the bilateral meeting, the Presidents discussed response of Lithuania and Poland to the Covid-19 pandemic, issues of human rights freedoms.

The Presidents agreed that Lithuanian and Polish authorities will strengthen the coordination and share good practices in managing the pandemic as well as implementation of vaccination and testing strategies. “In the face of the pandemic, it is highly important to complete the legal procedures for the approval of the multiannual EU Budget and the Recovery Fund so that the planned funds can be used as soon as possible”, President Nausėda said.

Both Presidents said it was necessary to maintain and expand EU sanctions against Russia, together with the EU and the US fight against falsification of history, interference in elections in third countries, and attempts to take human lives.

The leaders also discussed the deteriorating situation in Belarus in the field of human rights and freedoms. It was agreed that not only the pressure of the international community on the regime had to be stepped up but also an EU economic support plan for a democratic Belarus had to be drafted as soon as possible. President Nausėda emphasized the principled position not to allow unsafe electricity from the Ostravets NPP into the EU market.

The President of Lithuania and the President of Poland once again stressed the need to speed up the synchronization to take over the management of the electricity system by 2025 and drop electricity imports from third countries.

On November 18, during the visit of the Polish President, the President’s Office, Enterprise Lithuania, the Lithuanian-Polish Chamber of Commerce and the Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists will hold a Lithuanian-Polish online business forum which will be opened by the two Presidents.

During the meeting, the Presidents also marked a remarkable historic date for Lithuania and Poland – the 500th birth anniversary of King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Sigismund Augustus.

The visit of the Polish leader is organized in line with the quarantine requirements established in Lithuania and following the advice of experts of the Ministry of Health and health care professionals.
