The President on Lithuania’s membership on the UN Human Rights Council: an opportunity to demonstrate leadership in human rights

Last thursday evening, Lithuania was elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for 2022-2024. President Gitanas Nausėda thanked the international community for placing its confidence in Lithuania and underlined that this would be a great opportunity for Lithuania to demonstrate leadership in the field of human rights.

“The UN Human Rights Council inspires us to protect human rights, identify the most sensitive areas and find solutions. Lithuania is ready to use its international experience as it joins the UN Human Rights Council community as full member,” the President said.

According Gitanas Nausėda, Lithuania will focus on the protection of human rights defenders, the rights of the child, the rights of persons with disabilities, and on human rights in conflict zones.

“We will continue to defend the rights of women and girls, freedom of peaceful assembly and association, freedom of religion and belief, and we will work to ensure access to information and the safety of journalists,” the President said.
