Festival Midsummer Vilnius 2018 invites to enjoy music and theatre in the historical heart of the city
For the third time already, the festival Midsummer Vilnius takes place in the historical center of the city, Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. Even though the festival is halfway through, there are still so many performances to see. The following festival program will delight us with its broad diversity: from the finest operatic arias, to soul and jazz chords and most beautiful music collaborations – all under the night sky in the historical heart of Vilnius.
Last week a great start was given by the opening event of Midsummer Vilnius Festival: a concert by one of the most famous Lithuanian musicians Andrius Mamontovas along with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Modestas Pitrėnas. Those in favor of modern classical music were invited to a performance of an exceptional young-generation Norwegian violinist Mari Samuelsen and the New Ideas Chamber Orchestra (NIKO) the next day. The Freaks On Floor band brought rock music to the courtyard of the palace with a the concert titled “Rock Mass”. The dance magic has been spread by the LOW AIR Vilnius City Dance Theatre dance performance “The Rite of Spring”. Finally, at the end of the week, the Palace of Grand Dukes of Lithuania was shaken by hip hop rhythms -an exceptional performance by Lithuanian hip hop leaders G&G Sindikatas who brought along their “Unplugged” concert series project.
This week is about to begin with the most impressive William Shakespeare’s piece “Hamlet” directed by Oskaras Koršunovas. This staging of the famous play is celebrating its 10th anniversary and will be raising timeless existential questions under the open summer sky on 23rd of July. This is one of the most attended plays in Lithuania, as well as the one being most toured abroad among other plays of OKT / Vilnius City Theatre. Oskaras Koršunovas often says that he makes attempts to direct the modern dramaturgy as classical and vice versa. “Hamlet” is not a historical play reviving the past epochs either.
On Tuesday, 24th of July, the unearthly voice of Alina Orlova will spread at the heart of Vilnius and will delight the longing listeners. The performer, who rarely gives concerts in Lithuania, is to present her newest album during the Midsummer Vilnius Festival. A string quartet will also play along on the stage with Alina Orlova.
On the evening of 25th of July this year The Opera under the Stars will invite us to listen to the most beautiful operatic arias. The Opera under the Stars event has already become a tradition of the festival and is a real refreshment for those in favor of classical music. Pieces will be performed by Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Modestas Pitrėnas along with young-generation bass soloist and winner of many international competitions Liudas Mikalauskas, as well as opera soloist, owner of impressive soprano, winner of many international competitions and laureate of the Young Music Performer Prize 2017 Jomantė Šležaitė.
There is also some good news for dreamy electronic music for lovers as the popular Swedish band Little Dragon is to perform a concert in the grand courtyard of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania on 26th of July. Most probably, there is no need to introduce Little Dragon to the audience as the band has been active for more than twenty years, and several generations of music lovers have been enjoying its music. The four-member band, which is currently performing all over the world, is to present its fifth studio album titled “Season High”. In addition to the famous songs such as “Twice” and “Ritual Union”, the listeners will be able to hear the repertoire supplemented by the newest songs in a non-traditional space for electronic music – the courtyard of the palace.
The closing event of Midsummer Vilnius Festival of this year will be marked by an impressive project as the hearts and souls of the audience will be enchanted by a magical concert by Aistė Smilgevičiūtė and SKYLĖ together with the Ąžuoliukas choir in the grand courtyard of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania on 27 July. During the closing event, the audience will see an incredibly large number of professional performers who will be creating an unearthly phenomenon of music and images. The musicians will perform a musical-mythological drama “Dūšelės” (Little Souls) and a variety of well-known songs by SKYLĖ dedicated exceptionally for the commemoration of the Centenary of the Lithuanian State.
