Acting in accordance with the Constitution, the Law on Citizenship and advice received from the Citizenship Commission, President Dalia Grybauskaitė signed a decree on granting Lithuanian citizenship by way of exception to Jonas Ohman, a national of Sweden.
The President took into account Jonas Ohman’s outstanding merits to Lithuania, his successful integration into Lithuanian society and significant contribution to promoting the name of Lithuania around the world. Jonas Ohman has translated seven books by Lithuanian authors into Swedish. He directed several documentary films about post-war resistance in Lithuania. He is the recipient of a number of awards, medals and badges of honor.
During their meeting, the President and Jonas Ohman focused on the situation in Ukraine facing Russia’s open military aggression in the Sea of Azov.
According to Dalia Grybauskaitė, it was necessary to step up measures of support and assistance to Ukraine. Lithuania has been providing Ukraine with weapons, military training and rehabilitation services to wounded soldiers.
The President underlined that Ukraine’s security was inseparable from the security of Lithuania and of the whole Europe – a strong reason for delivering more military support to Ukraine. Next week, the President will travel to Kyiv to pledge Lithuania’s unwavering support to the Ukrainian people.
Jonas Ohman – a public figure, filmmaker and social project launcher – set up “Blue and Yellow” in 2014 to support Ukrainian soldiers and assist schools devastated by war. The organization raised almost half a million euros over the last four years. At Ohman’s initiative, annual Ukraine aid concerts are held and broadcast on January 13.
Jonas Ohman has been living in Lithuania for more than ten years. He speaks fluent Lithuanian, teaches Swedish and is avidly interested in Lithuanian history, culture and public life.
