On 4 September the United States Army troops of 2nd Battalion, 69th Regiment, 2nd Brigade will start deploying in Lithuania for training. Together with Lithuanian and other allied counterparts they will be conducting training in Gen. Silvestras Žukauskas Training Area in Pabradė (Švenčionys district). They will bring together tanks Abrams tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles and associate support vehicles.
“The United States is Lithuania’s strategic transatlantic defence partner and one of the main allies ensuring the security of the entire Baltic region. The rotation of the U.S. troops in Lithuania is a deterrence factor of particular significance contributing to NATO efforts in the Baltic region. We seek to ensure proper conditions for the U.S. troops training,” – Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis says.
The U.S. troops are coming to train in Lithuania as part of the U.S. Army operation Atlantic Resolve in the eastern part of the Alliance. It is a confirmation of collective defence commitments to NATO allies in ensuring security in Europe following Russia’s aggressive actions in Ukraine. The U.S. Army troops have been rotating and training in the Baltics and Eastern Europe since the spring of 2014.
These exercises of the U.S. troops in Lithuania are pre-planned and not associated with any events in the region.
To deliver their military equipment to Gen. S. Žukauskas Training Area, the U.S. troops are planning to use the branch of the railway line Pabradė – Paberžė, which was finished this spring especially for transportation of allied equipment. The U.S. troops that completed their training in spring were the first to test this branch in practice.
In order to ensure that allied forces in Lithuania could conduct effective training, support military training and act as a means of deterrence, Lithuania is investing in the development of infrastructure in Pabradė Training Area and other training sites as well as improving other capabilities of host nation support.
The United States is Lithuania’s strategic partner and main ally ensuring security in the Baltic region. It is actively involved in implementing security measures in the Baltic States, strengthening security and stability in the region. The United States actively contributes to the defence of our region with its troops, equipment and financial resources. Under the European Deterrence Initiative, the financial support for strengthening defence capabilities and improving military infrastructure of European countries, including Lithuania, is constantly increased. The U.S. is also one of the main partners in the procurement of armament.
